Let stones speak: rocking around our European heritage

Thanks to the approval of seven National LLP Agencies located in the four corners of Europe, our multilateral Comenius schools project is now underway.

For the next two years, until June 2015, pupils and teachers from France, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Spain will collaborate and cooperate in creating a truly European experience.

In doing so, they will attempt to go beyond traditional teaching and learning methodologies, open their classroom to encompass trans-national communication, hands-on fieldwork, continual ITC updating and contact with external experts from many walks of life. All the above will have as it's general aim the preparation of future EU citizens, competent in communicating across borders, taking part in cross-national teams and working towards a common goal.



Rocks are the building blocks of our dynamic planet and the foundations of European culture and civilization. They form the landscape and provide us with valuable resources. Rocks to a geologist are like a map to a traveller. By studying rocks, it is possible to learn much about a planet. They provide clues to its past from which certain conclusions can be drawn and predictions can be made. Hidden in rock, there is a multitude of treasures to be discovered: minerals, metals, crystals and fossils. Man’s first tools were made from stone and flint, rock was quarried and mined to build tombs, memorial or runic stones, houses, fortresses, aqueducts, bridges, roads and amphitheatres. In ancient times, certain rock formations and precious stones were deemed to have special powers, some of which were beneficial to man; others life-threatening.

Partners will embark on a journey of their regions in search of rock formations, mining villages and historical, man-made stone constructions with the purpose of exploring, developing and celebrating the links between that geological heritage and all other aspects of the area's natural, cultural and social history. Their findings will be uploaded to our common Wikispace.

Together, we will learn to read geological maps, how to classify rocks and minerals, discovering their properties as well as their geological history. Consequently, our field work will take us to European geosites, exo-museums and geotopes. Our trails will be registered with a GPS, with descriptions of nearby budget accommodation, photos, videos, environmentally-friendly activities and uploaded to the collective Wikispace as examples of Geotourism. Learning about rocks will lead to a collective appreciation and respect for Planet Earth.
